Backlog Tracking Dilemma
Good morrow fellow backloggers! It’s Friday so rejoice in the fact that you can now cartwheel and dance up and down the hallways at work in celebration of the upcoming weekend! You may want to double check your “hallway celebration protocols” before attempting such things first. I wouldn’t want any of you to be unjustly reprimanded.
So, for the last few days, I’ve been thinking a whole bunch about how I’m tracking my backlog. I mean, the wife and I have sat down on multiple occasions and discussed this very topic! It’s mostly because I’ve been hard at work developing the Backlog Tracker for the website and need a good concise plan, but also because I want to figure out how to handle games that I didn’t personally purchase or that kinda popped up out of nowhere. Believe you me, I greatly appreciate all games I receive, but it’s kinda forming a backlog dilemma.
For one, I want… nay… I need to track these games because I definitely want to get to them at some point (if I don’t play them right away), but the mere fact that they’re being added to the pile means it’s more difficult to track the games I’ve actually purchased and truly need to get off my backlog. I mean, this whole backlog equilibrium thing where I finish one game then receive another needs a solution!
And here is what we came up with. I will track all games I have in my collection, whether they were purchased by me, gifted to me, acquired through something like Games with Gold or that I’ve received for review purposes and they’ll be added to my overall collection. This is so I can at least know that I have it. But only those games that I’ve personally purchased with the intent to play or have been gifted to me will be added to the backlog. If I do end up deciding to play and complete any other games that happens to find its way into my collection, I’ll add them to the completed list, but it shouldn’t affect the backlog count.
This is really for my own sanity, but I’d love to hear what you all think. Should I just keep adding all games in my collection to the backlog or does my plan make sense? Let me know!
Aside from debating on how I should track my backlog I’ve also been trying to think of ways to distract myself from buying video games. So, instead of buying video games, I’ve lately become obsessed with anime and game figures!
And since playing Monster Hunter: World, my wife has been feverishly trying to find a super cool Kirin Armor Hunter figure to put up on our shelves. It is her favorite armor set after all. I can’t blame her either, it’s pretty dang cool, and quite cathartic wearing that b-hole’s pelts after the trouble it gave us while fighting it. Unfortunately, trying to find one of these figures is difficult and when you do find a nice one they’re crazy expensive!
But after diving into the anime figure rabbit hole yesterday, I came across the concept of a Garage Kit figure. Which basically has you assemble and paint the figure yourself. That and it greatly reduces the cost of said figure. Now the authentic ones that you’d find at something like the Tokyo Wonder Festival can still be expensive. I mean, your buying these directly from the artists and they’re produced in very limited quantities. But you can also find outlets like E2046 that’ll sell recasts of these Garage Kits. They aren’t quite as high quality as the ones you’d find at WonFest, but they’re pretty dang nice! And a whole lot cheaper.
So to make a long story short, I was able to find my wife a super cool Monster Hunter Kirin Armor Hunter figure! It’ll probably be a lot of work to assemble this thing, but I’m pretty flippin’ excited to see how it turns out! The most terrifying part is having to paint it myself, and believe you me I’m nowhere near a talented painter. But the most important part is that my wife is excited and that fills my heart with joy! Here is a link to the figure if you’d like to check it out for yourself:
I’ll definitely keep you all posted with my progress on this journey of self assembled anime figures!
Oh, but before I move on from Monster Hunter, I just want to mention that The Witcher 3 has shown up in the game! And you can play as Geralt! I’m not sure if I’ll jump back in to try it out, but I know my wife has been strongly considering it. So you may see an update from her on this sweet crossover!
