A Restart FTW

Happy Friday everyone!! Time to roll around on the floor while squealing at the top of your lungs. This is at work of course and you’ll do it until someone reports you to your superior and they send you home just to get rid of you. Little do they know that was your plan all along!

So, instead of doing silly things like not playing Resident Evil 2 last night – I played some Resident Evil 2 last night! I’m still plugging away at Leon’s route B playthrough and making some progress, but at some point while playing it I came to the determination that I was doing horribly. I was half dead, had no bullets and pretty much got myself stuck between a rock and a hard place. And that’s when I came to the decision that I just need to restart this playthrough. I mean, route B is already confusing enough with the rearranged items and scarcer bullets. That and with Mr. X hot on my heels I had no chance in zombie infested hell. My hopes of survival were slim to none.

Let me tell ya, I’m glad I did. Now that I’m getting more familiar with this route, I was able to skirt zombies more efficiently and had a better idea of where I needed to go and when. I’m already at the second half of the R.P.D. and I’ve only put about 1.5 hours into this run! I’m hoping I should be able to finish this playthrough under 3 hours which will give me an S rank!

At that pace I’ll more than likely have Leon’s campaign finished up tonight and then it’s on to Claire’s route B. Which I’m hearing is much, much easier than Leon’s. And with the weekend ahead of me, it’s possible Resident Evil 2 could be finished up before we talk again next week!

Making Things That are Fast Look Not Fast

Now that I’m coming on the end of the “story” runs of Resident Evil 2 I’m really starting to get the urge to start speed running it so I can hit that coveted S+ rank and unlock some sweet sweet weapons and costumes. The only problem I’m having right now is the fact that I still don’t feel like I know what I’m doing. Well, I don’t know enough to be able to run through the game efficiently, avoiding damage and conserving ammo. Honestly, it’s one of my favorite things to do in Resident Evil games. Don’t get me wrong, I also love taking my time and exploring every inch of the game, but there’s something exhilarating about learning the ins and outs of a game and being able to speed through it with skill!!

So, the first step was figuring out some tricks that’ll make getting through the tightly packed hallways of the R.P.D. a little easier and a little safer. That and what order works best when collecting the items. I’m guessing I’ll want to collect them in such a way that I’ll never run out of inventory space and just when I’m about to I’ll able to use those items to free up space. Inventory management amirite?!

I was able to find some simple written guides, but not being able to see those strategies in action makes them a little harder to follow. I remember when playing the remake of the original Resident Evil there was a trick that allowed you to ascend and descend stairways faster by mashing either the aim button or the run button, (I can’t remember which) but it wasn’t until I saw it in a real speedrun that I truly understood how it was used. So, that’s when I started looking up speed running videos of Resident Evil 2 to see what the latest and greatest strats were. It didn’t take long before I discovered this fantastic little video on speedrun.com by Basler. He’s actually doing a guide for the 120fps version of Resident Evil 2 which I think is only possible on the PC, but the basic tricks he performs in his run should help regardless of your framerate. I haven’t gone through the entire video yet, but I’m excited to see how these speedrunners pick apart RE2!

I’m also excited to try out some of these tricks myself once I’m ready to do my speedier runs after I beat the story!! There aren’t too many games that’ll I’ll take the time to replay enough to get good enough to speedrun, but I always try to make the time for Resident Evil!

45 Backwards is 54

Well my friends that’ll do it for today and this week!! I’m looking forward to diving back into Resident Evil 2 and speeding through those R.P.D. hallways. Hopefully avoiding getting bitten by a zombie or getting sucker punched by Mr. X! I also have a new game that I’ll be starting to talk about next week so definitely look forward to that!! Here’s a little hint – It’s by the same developers that made Reverie!!

Until next week, have a great weekend and I’ll see you on Monday!!
