I take a break from my “gaming lull” and bust out the undead beats with Crypt of the Necrodancer!!
The Undead Jig
Good day backloggers!! Today feels like a day where all I want to do is dance, and listen to thumping techno music, and play video games and write sweet backlog nothings for your eyeballs. And entertainment I guess. Alas, I am unable to do those things at the moment due to the whole work thing. Well, I guess I could, but I’m sure my co-workers wouldn’t appreciate it. Or maybe they would. There’s really only one way to find out!! *blasts techno music and dances*
I’m in this groovy mood because in my “gameless lull” of less than 24 hours, I’ve decided to pick Crypt of the Necrodancer up again! It definitely checks all the right boxes that’s for sure and I think it’ll fit nicely as a side game once I figure out what my main game will be!! And speaking of main games, if you haven’t voted on what that will be yet, then go do it now dang it!! You can find the poll here on Twitter.
Forget about Crypt of the Necrodancer being great sidegame material though because it’s more than just that. Necrodancer is a stellar rhythm based, dungeon crawling roguelite that already has its hooks dug deep within my gamer soul and I just can’t put it down! It’s everything from it’s fantastic sprite work and character design, to that absolutely amazing soundtrack by Danny Baranowsky!! I mean, I’ve had that OST stuck on repeat for the last several years since it first graced my earholes!! Honestly, it’s the reason I keep coming back to this game.
That’s not all though, because Crypt of the Necrodancer has everything you would want in a good dungeon crawler too. Including powerful loot to collect, a variety of cool enemies and bosses to fight and a ton of challenges to complete! I find myself constantly saying “just one more round” when what I really mean is five or six at the minimum.
Brace Yourself Games has been hard at work since Crypt of the Necrodancer’s original release, applying cool new features and additions to the game! Including alternate soundtracks by the likes of FamilyJules7x and Jake Kaufman and extra characters to spice things ups! The Switch version (what I’m playing now) has an exclusive character as well that you can’t get anywhere else! Very exciting! All of this should add a ton of replayability to the game, and it’ll give me something more to look forward to since I’ve already played a good deal of it on my PS4.
Switch of the Necrodancer
So far I’ve finished the first two levels in the game, which is probably the farthest I’ve ever made it. And when I think about it, I don’t know why I haven’t played it more. It’s probably because I usually get distracted by other games and since it’s such an easy game to “play on the side”, I more than likely just forgot about it. It also, didn’t help that the last time I played it, it was on the PS4. Which meant, I was tethered to the TV and if anyone else in the household was using it, then I needed to find something else to do.
And that’s why I’m so excited to play it on my Switch. Being able to get my Necrodancin’ fix anywhere at anytime is certainly a great motivator!! My only real issue with playing it on the Switch is the lack of surround sound features when hooking it up to the TV. Unlike the Xbox One and PS4, the Switch doesn’t have an optical audio out port. All of it’s surround sound capabilities are only through the HDMI, which unfortunately my audio receiver doesn’t accept. I know, I know, I should probably upgrade it to a more modern standard but I love my janky home theatre system. It has soul. Honestly though, It’s a tiny complaint and it’s more about the Switch hardware than it is about the game, but I crave those THICC beats!
Well my friends that’s going to do it for today!! I’m sure I’ll have a bunch more Necrodancing in my foreseeable future and I’m super excited to find out what I’ll be playing next come the conclusion of the Twitter poll tomorrow!! So far it looks like Child of Light, but who knows, a good upset could be on the horizon!!
Until tomorrow have a great rest of your day!!
