As my thoughts meander, I dream of Crypt of the Necrodancer and Child of Light!
Good day backloggin’ people!! We made it! It’s the 67th Daily Backlog! I don’t know why that’s so exciting since it’s an arbitrary number and I don’t have anything special planned for today. But I can say this, it has landed on a Wednesday and the two numbers that make up this extraordinary combo… are sequential. So there ya go. Problem solved. The conundrum has been de-conundruminized.
Anyhoo, I’ve been wracking my brain all morning trying to figure out what I’ll be talking about today and I gotta say, I’m having a tough time. So, if it seems like I’m rambling and going off on tangents you have been warned! Also, if it seems like all of a sudden I contradict myself and come up with something super interesting and 5 pages long. Then I’m going to be up front with you and say “I regret nothing!!”.
I mean, I’m still in that “between games” phase where I’m waiting on the conclusion of the coveted Twitter pole that’ll help me decide what I’ll be tackling next on the ole backlog. So I’ve been kinda hesitant to really put my all into anything at the moment. Which is probably why I’m not really sure what I want to talk about. And so far it definitely seems like Child of Light is going to win.
What has me excited the most about the prospect of playing it is that it was developed using the UbiArt Framework which has produced some visually striking games! Including Rayman Legends and Valiant Hearts. Actually, the more research I do on it, I’m surprised Ubisoft hasn’t used that framework for more things! I mean, they haven’t produced a game using it since 2015! The most interesting thing about the UbiArt Framework is that it allows artists and animators easier access to development tools without the need for heavy technical lifting (which is done by the engine). I’m sure there’s still need for some programmatic bench pressing but the fact that the creative people behind a project can really put their heads down and experiment on the fly could lead to some interesting outcomes!
So the long and the short of it is, I’m excited to see what Ubisoft was able to pull off with Child of Light! If it wins that is!
The Idle Necrodancer
I’ve of course, been biding my time with more Crypt of the Necrodancer as well, but I gotta say it’s a tough game to cover. Not because I’m not having fun nor is it because I’ve not been putting a good deal of time into it but because of the nature of its gameplay. There is a lot of rinse and repeat in this game. You know, as I die over and over while I try to get better at recognizing enemy patterns and make progress in the game. Which is an absolute blast mind you! But because I’m just seeing the same stuff over and over, it’s a little dull to write about. There’s only so many ways I can say “I’ve tried level 3 and died halfway through!”. I will say this though, after putting much more time into it than I have in the past, I really appreciate how Crypt of the Necrodancer handles your progression.
For one, it allows you to start at the last level you unlocked so you can progress the story easily. And the devs dole out the equipment frequently enough that you aren’t handicapped by doing so. You’ll have ample opportunities to find that super handy gear!! It’s not guaranteed, but it’s also not not guaranteed and I appreciate that. That and it definitely helps that you can unlock permanent upgrades like health, chest rarity types and your gold multiplier using the diamonds you find on your runs. You can also use them to unlock powerful weapons, armor and spells that you’ll be given the chance to find as you play. And let me tell ya, you definitely want to find them! On runs where I don’t, it’s pretty much guaranteed I’ll die early and often!
I am hoping to see this game through though, which is something I always strive for in roguelikes, but very rarely accomplish! They’re hard ok! But I’m banking on my love for its soundtrack to keep me on the straight and narrow!!

Well my friends, I think that’ll do it for today! I probably could have rambled on for a bit longer, but I thought I’d spare you for now. The Twitter poll is up later today so we should find out what I’ll be playing next really soon and I’m sure I’ll be diving into whatever it turns out to be, post haste! That is if Crypt of the Necrodancer doesn’t distract me from my task at hand.
