The Eldritch Board Game
Good morning all! Sleepy today, so so sleepy.
So last night my brother stopped by to play some “meaty” board games. You know those types of board games that require a 100 page manual and 5 bazillion pieces plus an app to play. And the game we decided to play last night was Mansions of Madness.
We’ve been playing this particular game for a while now, but before we came across Mansions of Madness it was actually the first game of its type we’ve ever experienced. The best way I can describe it would be a mixture of pen and paper RPG (a la Dungeons and Dragons) and one of those VHS companion games like Nightmare or Atmosfear.
Each time you play the game you select a scenario from the companion app, you’ll select your characters and the app will guide you through the story, deploy map tiles and monsters and direct the game from start to finish. So basically the app is replacing your Dungeon or Game Master. Typically a game can last between 60 minutes and 3 or 4 hours! And when you get my brother, my wife and I playing (aka goofing around), even the shortest games take us to the wee hours of the night. As it did last night.
We ended up playing one of the newer DLC scenarios (that’s right this board game has DLC!) called Altered Fates. This time around it was much more about investigating and exploring instead of the usual all out monster fighting fest. Which I really enjoyed. And instead of us all being together, the game split us up into two groups across alternate versions of the same area. So my wife and brother were in the future version of the map and I was in the past. It had us working together and using special portals to pass each other items in order to solve the puzzles. Very fun! The only issue I had with it, was that it ended up being a little easy and the scenario kind of ended abruptly.
It does sound weird, but I like the fact that Fantasy Flight Games is still supporting the game with extra scenarios through DLC. And the fact that these follow up stories are digital and can be purchased through Steam means you don’t have to go out and drop an exorbitant amount of money on new physical pieces. Though those do exist as well.
Mansions of Madness is super cool and it has inspired each of us to take deep dives into these complex board games. Like all of my other hobbies it can be super expensive, but it’s a great way to get together for a few hours, grab some tasty snacks and adult beverages and get away from the TV screens. Though we are still using a computer.
We also have the Dark Souls board game so the next time we play it, I’ll have to report back!
A Trip to Namek
Aside from sinking a large swath of time into plastic figures and cardboard tiles, my wife and I finally finished the first season of Dragon Ball Z! What’s funny is that the creators mustn’t have planned to actually split these things out in to actual “seasons” because the first volume ends with Bulma, Krillin and Gohan getting trapped in a mysterious spaceship on their way to Namek. I actually didn’t think they’d even get into space until the second season.
It also makes me curious to see how Funimation cut this series up with the Kai release of Z. Apparently they’ve edited out a lot of the filler and shaved out the equivalent of 7 or 8 episodes per season! Though, I don’t think it would be the same without all the powering up and extended travel times that take two or three entire episodes.
I’m really looking forward to diving into the second season and with that we’re getting ever closer to my favorite arc – the Frieza Saga!
The 21 of Tomorrow’s 22
That’s going to do it for this fine Tuesday my fellow backloggers! Not much to report on the backlog progress today, just more and more farming for my “tier 1” MonHun armor. Which requires fighting a whole bunch of very aggressive and angry dragons. And more anime shenanigans in Fairy Fencer F. I guess that’s what happens when you decide to spend “quality family time” with your fam jam. Though I do feel it in my bones that I’m getting close to the point where I can finally move on in the story for Monster Hunter. Who knows, maybe tomorrow I’ll have a much more significant amount of info to report back on!
Until then my friends have a great day!!
